Beef jerky can cost up to $20 a pound or more! It does not make sense for any beef jerky lover to pay such a high price when beef jerky can be made for around $3.00 a pound! That’s right, by making beef jerky at home the average person can save $17.00 a pound or more. Making beef jerky at home is a fairly easy thing to do.

One of the most popular ways to make beef jerky at home is to use a food dehydrator. A food dehydrator can cost any where from around $30, all the way up to $300 or more. For practical purposes an inexpensive food dehydrator will do just fine.

An alternative way is to use your oven to make beef jerky There are several methods for making beef jerky in the oven. There are special hangers that can be purchased, or they can be made from bamboo, wooden, or metal skewers. There are beef jerky pans with elevated racks made out of stainless steel, aluminum, and even aluminum foil.

Beef jerky can be made by smoking beef strips in a smoker or a bar-b-q. There are even solar beef jerky makers. These also range in price like the food dehydrators, or can be made from cardboard boxes and plastic wrap. Another method for making beef jerky uses cool air from a box fan. Any of the methods mentioned so far for making beef jerky can save the consumer a pretty penny.

When it comes to different flavors of jerky the sky is the limit! Ask 10 people who make their own beef jerky at home about his/her recipe and they each will probably have their own “secret recipe”, and will not be willing to give it up. The truth is they probably don’t know for sure because they just add a little of “this” and a little of “that”. There are many free recipes on the web, but many fall short or “great”.

Making your own beef jerky at home can be fun and end up saving you some dough, especially if you are a beef jerky lover.

Drying or dehydrating vegetables is one of the oldest known methods of food preservation. The really great thing about it is that you can do it at home with equipment you have on hand.

You should pick your produce at it’s peak and work as quickly as you can to preserve its colour and taste.

Prepare your vegetables as if you were going to serve them. Wash them well, trim, cut, chop, slice, whatever. Thickness will play an important role in how long your veggies take to dehydrate, so bear that in mind when preparing.

Next you must blanch the vegetables. This will preserve the colour and flavour of the vegetable. Most vegetables have an enzyme that, left active, is what makes it spoil so quickly. Blanching the vegetables stops the enzyme action.

Follow available guidelines for blanching (available at http://www.no-dig-vegetablegarden.com). Once blanched, chilled and drained, you are ready to dry or dehydrate your vegetables for long

    term storage.

    The Rules

Of course, there are heaps of rules…but let’s start here.

There are three methods used to dry or dehydrate vegetables.

Sun dried, commercial dehydrator or oven.

Sun drying is the least reliable method for areas with variable temperatures. Unless you live in a climate that is a consistent 90F with low humidity for a guaranteed 3 days in a row, you risk your produce.

Once the drying starts, it cannot stop until finished. So DO NOT let your vegetables cool again until they’re done. Having said that, lots of places do have that sort of weather…but more places don’t, so sun drying is a bit of a gamble for most.

You can purchase food dehydraters in a range of sizes, but unless you are going to be doing an awful lot of this, it’s probably better to wait or buy one with a group of friends to pass around. They aren’t very expensive, but they are usually used for quite short periods of time.

So, we’re left with the oven. It’s almost certain that you have one, so nothing new to buy. It is time consuming and a little fiddly, but it’s such a great result!

    Oven drying

A home oven will only dry small quantities at a time (up to six pounds of produce, depending on the number of racks you have) so don’t be preparing bushells of veggies at a time!

Set the oven at the lowest temperature and preheat to 140F (60C). If you are uncertain of the temperature, put a separate oven thermometer on a rack you can see. Check your temperature

    every half hour or so.

Lay out your vegetables on stainless steel screen mesh or wooden

frames covered in cheescloth. Do NOT use cookie sheets as the

air must circulate around the food. Having the food sit next to

metal sheets may also transfer a metalic taste. Using other

types of metal materials may react with the food so please don’t.

Load up the veggies. Doing trays of items similar in size will keep the drying even. For instance, doing pumpkin, carrot and

potato might be a good mix. Try not to mix strong flavoured items as the flavour may transfer from one vegetable to another.

Keep the oven door open about 3 inches or so during drying. It is vital that the temperature is maintained at 140F (60C) and that the moist air can escape. Move the trays around frequently to ensure even drying. No oven has even heat throughout.

Keep a close eye on your drying vegetables. Don’t let them scorch and keep them moving.

Depending on the vegetable you are drying it will take between

4 and 12 hours to dry. Once they’re done, the vegetable pieces

will be hard and should shatter if hit with an instrument.

Store in a water tight container. To use, just add them to soups and sauces as they are, or reconstitute (cover them in a container with water 2:1 ratio) for approximately 2 hours before using.

Great for any RE fan – Azure_Warlord – CO USA
Despite what some others have said, I haven’t had any major problems with this blaster. The skin for the Wii-mote and nun-chuck are very cool. I think it’s a great buy if you’re a fan of the series. The cord hanging about is a little annoying, but I forgot about it after playing for 5 minutes. If you like anything RE, consider picking this up.

Grilling with gas has been extremely popular for several decades now, because of the ease and convenience of use coupled with the opportunity to grill great-tasting food. Although there are still a few people who refuse to give up the taste of grilling over a charcoal fire, most people just don’t find they have the time it takes to get a fire started and do their cooking that way. I can remember my dad working and working with lighter fluid and paper trying to get the charcoal started before he could cook our meal. Believe me, he was one of the first in line when gas grills were introduced, and for good reason.

Gas grills operate without messy, dirty charcoal and produce no ashes. Some of them run on LP gas and others can be plumbed in permanently to run on natural gas. You can find small ones that operate using only one temp and one burner as well as large, elaborate ones that incorporate four or even six burners, many different temperature levels, warming space, steel construction, and other luxury features. When buying a new gas grill, you have a lot of questions to ask yourself. Some of these might be: What’s the best gas grill on the market? Even if you find it, do you really need all of those high-end features and cooking power?

There are many Internet sites devoted to product reviews, and you can find a lot of information there regarding the various gas grills that are on the market. If you’re like most people, price is important, and you will want to research the different brands in order to get the most value for your money. Beware of websites that are trying to sell you something, because their reviews will be biased. Instead, find an independent site, such as Consumersearch.com, which tests and rates grills of all brands. This site will give you a wealth of information to help guide you in your grill selection.

It usually isn’t the best idea to just go out and buy a grill at Walmart without doing your homework and reading the gas grill reviews first. As with most products, cheaper doesn’t always mean better, unless you can find a great deal on a high-quality grill. If you can’t afford a more expensive grill, a cheap one will suffice for a couple of years. However, they are not well made, efficient, and durable as their more expensive counterparts.
